      Descripción

This dense and rustic Handwoven Hmong Hemp fabric carries the rich texture, weight, and unmistakable character of traditional handmade hemp textiles.

At approximately 380 GSM, it is a heavyweight cloth with a firm body, substantial handfeel, and strongly textured surface. Visible slubs, variations in yarn thickness, gentle ripples, and tonal movement give the fabric an organic quality that cannot be replicated by perfectly uniform machine weaving.

The narrow 30-inch width reflects its traditional handwoven construction and should be considered when calculating yardage. This fabric is particularly well suited to structured garments, bags, textile art, and heritage-inspired interiors where its weight and surface character can be fully appreciated.

      AVAILABLE SHADES

      • Olive Brown

      • Madder Orange

      • Berry Mauve

Each shade interacts differently with the slubbed hemp yarn, creating subtle changes in depth and tone across the surface.

Please select your preferred shade before placing your order.

      ABOUT HMONG HEMP TEXTILES

Hemp cloth has a long history within Hmong textile traditions, where hemp fibres have traditionally been prepared, spun, joined, and woven into durable fabric for clothing and household use.

The resulting textiles are known for their narrow width, visible yarn character, substantial construction, and beautiful surface irregularity.

This fabric preserves that rustic, handmade quality. It is intended for makers who value tactile materials, visible craftsmanship, and textiles that carry a strong sense of process and provenance.

      HOW THE FABRIC IS MADE

This fabric is woven from hemp yarns using a traditional handloom and a dense plain-weave construction.

The hemp yarns vary naturally in thickness, producing slubs, fine knots, and irregular lines across the surface. Changes in yarn tension and the rhythm of hand weaving introduce subtle variations in density and alignment.

These characteristics are integral to the fabric and create its distinctive handmade appearance.

Unlike flat industrial cloth, this textile is not designed to be perfectly smooth or uniform. Its irregular surface is part of its identity.

      • Overshirts and shackets

      • Vests and waistcoats

      • Structured skirts

      • Aprons

      • Tote bags and carryalls

      • Pouches and textile accessories

      • Cushion covers

      • Table runners

      • Placemats

      • Wall hangings

      • Framed textile artwork

      • Textile vessels and sculptural pieces

      • Patchwork and mixed-media projects

      • Heritage-inspired interiors

      • Contemporary fibre art

      • Upholstery accents for light decorative use

Because of its weight and pronounced texture, this fabric may not be suitable for delicate garments, gathered silhouettes, or projects requiring a soft, fluid fall.

      WIDTH AND YARDAGE

This fabric measures approximately 30 inches / 76 cm wide, which is considerably narrower than standard apparel and interior fabrics.

Please consider the narrow width carefully when calculating the quantity required for your project.

      • Additional yardage may be required for larger pattern pieces

      • Some garment pieces may need to be divided into panels

      • Pattern placement should be planned before cutting

      • Buying extra fabric is recommended when matching surface texture or tone

      • Check whether the listed width includes or excludes the selvedges

For large cushions, jackets, or home textiles, creative seaming and panel construction may be required.

      SEWING RECOMMENDATIONS

      • Pre-wash or pre-treat a measured swatch before cutting

      • Allow the fabric to rest flat before placing pattern pieces

      • Examine the grain, surface direction, and slub placement

      • Use sharp, heavy-duty fabric scissors or a rotary cutter

      • Use a strong needle suitable for heavyweight woven fabric

      • Test a size 90/14, 100/16, or denim needle

      • Use strong, high-quality thread

      • Select a longer stitch length after testing on an offcut

      • Stay-stitch curved and bias-cut edges

      • Finish raw edges with binding, overlocking, or enclosed seams

      • Reinforce pocket openings, handles, and other stress points

      • Grade or trim bulky seam allowances

      • Consider flat-felled or bound seams for durability

      • Use clips if pins are difficult to pass through the fabric

      • Use a walking foot if multiple layers shift during sewing

      • Test interfacing carefully, as the fabric already has substantial body

      • Press seams with steam and a pressing cloth

For bags and structured accessories, additional lining may be used to create a cleaner interior. For jackets or vests, a soft lining can improve comfort against the skin.

      WASH AND CARE

      • Test a measured swatch before washing the complete fabric

      • Hand wash in cold water whenever possible

      • Alternatively, machine wash on a cold, gentle cycle

      • Wash separately, especially during the first few washes

      • Wash darker shades separately

      • Use a mild, pH-neutral detergent

      • Do not bleach

      • Avoid harsh stain removers and fabric softeners

      • Do not soak for prolonged periods

      • Avoid wringing or twisting

      • Line dry in the shade

      • Reshape carefully while damp

      • Avoid tumble drying to minimise shrinkage

      • Steam or iron on medium heat if required

      • Iron from the reverse side with a pressing cloth

The fabric may soften, relax, and develop additional surface texture after washing. Some shrinkage or dimensional change should be expected, so pre-washing is strongly recommended for washable projects.

      HANDWOVEN CHARACTERISTICS

      This fabric may naturally display:

      • Pronounced slubs

      • Uneven yarn thickness

      • Small knots or joined yarns

      • Slight changes in weave density

      • Fine ripples or irregular lines

      • Tonal and shade variation

      • Minor changes in width

      • Occasional handloom marks

      • Slightly irregular selvedges

These characteristics are evidence of the handwoven process and should not be considered defects.

      COLOUR VARIATION

The textured hemp yarn may cause each shade to appear lighter or darker across different areas of the cloth.

Olive Brown may display earthy green, brown, and muted neutral undertones.

Madder Orange may range from warm rust and terracotta to softer orange tones.

Berry Mauve may show muted berry, dusty plum, and brown-mauve undertones.

Exact colour will vary according to lighting, screen settings, and the individual production batch. Purchase sufficient fabric for the complete project in one order when close colour matching is important.

      PLEASE NOTE

      • The fabric is approximately 30 inches wide

      • It is heavyweight, firm, and highly textured

      • It has no mechanical stretch

      • Slubs and uneven yarns are expected

      • Surface texture and weave density may vary throughout the yardage

      • Natural hemp may shrink or relax after washing

      • Pre-washing and testing a measured swatch are strongly recommended

      • Separate production batches may vary in colour and texture

      • Avoid pulling or cutting prominent slubs unless they fall directly on a cutting line

      • Colour may appear different depending on lighting and screen settings

We recommend ordering a swatch before purchasing larger quantities when exact shade, weight, width, texture, or project suitability is important.
