Descripción
This fine cotton cambric sits beautifully between lawn and voile—lightweight, smooth, and closely woven with a clean, refined surface.
At approximately 90 GSM, it feels crisp yet soft, with a cool hand and an elegant finish that feels polished rather than flimsy. The fabric is light enough for warm-weather clothing, delicate layers, and linings while retaining sufficient stability for precise cutting and sewing.
Its tightly woven plain structure gives the cambric excellent stitch retention and a consistent surface, making it particularly useful for dressmakers who value accuracy, comfort, and clean construction.
For minimalist garments, heirloom sewing, fine detailing, or everyday wardrobe pieces, this cambric provides a beautifully versatile foundation.
WHAT IS CAMBRIC?
Cambric is a lightweight, closely woven cotton fabric made using fine yarns in a plain-weave construction.
It is generally smoother and more tightly constructed than voile while remaining lighter and finer than standard shirting cotton. Compared with lawn, cambric often has a slightly firmer, crisper hand and greater structural stability.
This balance of lightness and control makes it suitable for garments requiring an airy feel without excessive transparency or instability.
HOW THE FABRIC IS MADE
• Woven from 100% cotton yarn
• Constructed in a fine, closely set plain weave
• Tightly woven for smoothness, stability, and durability
• Lightly finished to preserve breathability and a natural cotton handfeel
• Made without heavy coatings or rigid stiffening treatments
• Woven with a clean, consistent surface suitable for precise sewing
In a plain weave, each weft yarn passes alternately over and under each warp yarn. This simple, balanced construction gives the cloth its stable structure and makes it resistant to excessive shifting during cutting and sewing.

OPACITY
Opacity ranges from semi-opaque to opaque depending on the colour, lighting, and number of layers used.
White, ivory, pastel, and other pale shades may require lining for dresses, skirts, or fitted garments. Darker shades will generally offer greater coverage.
When opacity is important, we recommend testing a swatch against the skin under both natural and artificial light.
IDEAL USES
• Dresses and summer dresses

This is a stable woven fabric without mechanical stretch. It is not suitable for patterns that depend on elasticity unless sufficient ease or suitable closures are added.
HEIRLOOM AND DETAIL SEWING
The smooth, consistent surface makes this fabric particularly suitable for precise decorative techniques such as:
• Fine embroidery
• Hand smocking
• Pintucks
• Lace insertion
• Appliqué
• Monogramming
• Hemstitching
• French seams
• Delicate gathers
• Narrow pleats
Its closely woven structure supports fine stitches well, while the light weight allows detailed areas to remain elegant rather than bulky.
SEWING RECOMMENDATIONS
• Pre-wash the fabric before cutting
• Test shrinkage using a measured swatch
• Allow the fabric to rest flat before laying out pattern pieces
• Use sharp scissors or a rotary cutter
• Use a new fine universal or Microtex needle
• Test a needle size of approximately 60/8 or 70/10
• Use fine, high-quality cotton or polyester thread
• Select a short-to-medium stitch length after testing
• Stay-stitch necklines, armholes, and bias-cut edges
• Use French seams, narrow enclosed seams, or a fine overlocked finish
• Choose a narrow turned or rolled hem
• Use lightweight interfacing only where necessary
• Avoid heavy fusible materials that may overpower the fabric
• Press gently from the reverse side
For garment lining, select a colour that complements the outer fabric and confirm that both materials can be cleaned using compatible methods.
WASH AND CARE
• Pre-washing is strongly recommended
• Allow approximately 3–5% for possible shrinkage
• Hand wash in cold water or machine wash on a cold, gentle cycle
• Wash separately for the first few washes
• Use a mild, pH-neutral detergent
• Do not bleach
• Avoid harsh fabric softeners
• Do not soak for prolonged periods
• Avoid wringing or twisting
• Air dry flat or line dry in the shade
• Avoid tumble drying to minimise shrinkage
• Reshape while damp
• Steam lightly or iron on a cotton setting
• Iron while slightly damp for the smoothest result
• Test the iron temperature on an offcut first
The fabric may become softer and more relaxed after washing while retaining its smooth, closely woven character.
PLEASE NOTE
• Natural cotton may shrink or relax by approximately 3–5%
• Actual shrinkage depends on water temperature, agitation, and drying method
• Pre-washing and testing a measured swatch are recommended
• Lighter colours may require lining
• The fabric contains no elastane and has no mechanical stretch
• Minor variations in width, weave, and colour may occur
• Separate production batches may vary slightly in shade
• Purchase sufficient fabric for the complete project in one order when exact matching is important
• Colour and opacity may appear different depending on lighting and screen settings
We recommend ordering a swatch before purchasing larger quantities when exact colour, opacity, weight, texture, or drape is important for your project.
