ABOUT PURE LINEN

Linen is a natural bast fibre obtained from the flax plant. It is valued for its breathability, strength, moisture management, and ability to become softer and more comfortable with continued washing and wear.

Unlike fabrics engineered to appear perfectly uniform, pure linen naturally displays small slubs, tonal shifts, and variations in yarn thickness. These characteristics contribute to its distinctive tactile surface and relaxed, organic appearance.

Linen initially has a dry, lightly crisp hand. With use and proper washing, the fibres relax and soften while retaining their inherent strength and textured identity.

HOW THE FABRIC IS MADE

This fabric is constructed in a balanced plain weave using medium-fine 40s linen yarns in both the warp and weft directions.

In a plain weave, each weft yarn passes alternately over and under each warp yarn. This simple, stable construction creates a breathable cloth with balanced strength, natural flexibility, and excellent versatility.

Using the same yarn count in both directions helps produce a consistent fabric with a softly structured drape. The weave also allows the characteristic slubs and variations of linen yarn to remain visible across the surface.

UNDERSTANDING THE CONSTRUCTION

40s Linen Warp × 40s Linen Weft refers to the approximate yarn count used in both directions of the fabric.

Warp yarns run lengthwise through the cloth, while weft yarns are woven across its width. Using medium-fine linen yarns in both directions creates a fabric that balances breathability, durability, and natural drape.

The estimated thread density of 58–64 EPI and 44–48 PPI describes the approximate number of warp and weft yarns within one inch of fabric.

Small variations in thread density may occur due to finishing, relaxation, and the natural variation present in linen yarns.

This is a stable woven fabric without mechanical stretch. Patterns that require elasticity should be adapted with suitable ease, closures, or additional design allowance.

COLOUR AND OPACITY

The fabric is available in Merlot, Mauve, Dusty Pink, Powder Pink, Army Green, and White.

Opacity may vary between colours. Darker shades will generally appear more opaque, while White and Powder Pink may require lining depending on the garment, lighting, and desired coverage.

The matte surface gives the colours a soft, refined appearance rather than a glossy or highly saturated finish.

SEWING RECOMMENDATIONS

• Pre-wash the fabric before cutting

• Test shrinkage using a measured swatch

• Allow the fabric to rest flat before laying out pattern pieces

• Use a universal needle suitable for medium-weight woven linen

• Test a size 80/12 needle before sewing the complete project

• Use good-quality cotton or polyester thread

• Select a medium stitch length after testing on an offcut

• Stay-stitch curved and bias-cut edges

• Finish raw edges with French seams, binding, overlocking, or enclosed seams

• Use lightweight or medium-weight interfacing where structure is required

• Avoid pulling or stretching the fabric while sewing

• Press seams during construction for a clean finish

• Use a pressing cloth on darker colours

For garments requiring complete coverage or additional structure, a lightweight cotton, voile, or compatible lining may be added.

WASH AND CARE

• Pre-washing is strongly recommended

• Hand wash or machine wash on a cold, gentle cycle

• Wash separately for the first few washes

• Wash dark and light colours separately

• Use a mild, pH-neutral detergent

• Do not bleach

• Avoid harsh fabric softeners

• Do not soak for prolonged periods

• Do not wring or twist

• Line dry in the shade

• Reshape while damp

• Avoid tumble drying to minimise shrinkage

• Iron while slightly damp for the smoothest finish

• Use a medium-to-warm linen setting after testing

• Iron on the reverse side of darker shades

• Steam may be used to relax creases

If you prefer linen’s naturally relaxed appearance, the fabric may be worn or used without ironing.
