Bengal Handwoven Cotton Seersucker-Inspired Fabric, 45" Wide, 92 GSM
$22.00Excl. T.V.A.
Description
This light and airy Bengal handwoven cotton features a seersucker-inspired weave that creates gentle puckering and enhanced breathability without elastane or a chemically applied crinkle finish.
At approximately 92 GSM, it is an ultra-lightweight, summer-ready cloth with a distinctly artisanal character. The fabric appears lightly crisp while feeling soft and comfortable in wear, with a textured surface that helps hold portions of the cloth slightly away from the skin.
This naturally promotes airflow, reduces cling, and makes the fabric especially comfortable in warm and humid climates. Its subtle surface variation gives the cloth visual depth while remaining refined, understated, and easy to incorporate into contemporary garments.
HOW THE FABRIC IS MADE
This fabric is woven by hand in Bengal using traditional looms and fine cotton yarns.
Its seersucker-inspired texture is created structurally through variations in warp tension and weave construction. Differently tensioned yarns contract and relax at varying rates, forming subtle puckered stripes directly within the cloth.
The texture is woven into the fabric rather than produced using elastane, printing, embossing, or a topical chemical crinkle treatment. Because the puckering is structural, it remains an integral part of the cloth.
A light, minimal finish preserves the fabric’s natural handfeel, airiness, and handcrafted character.

HANDFEEL AND DRAPE
Handfeel: Cool, crisp, and breathable
Surface: Delicately puckered and lightly tactile
Drape: Fluid, light, and airy
Body: Feather-light with enough structure to reduce cling
Movement: Soft and responsive
Opacity: Semi-opaque, depending on colour, lighting, and layering
The fabric gathers beautifully and falls into soft, airy folds. Its gently raised texture prevents it from sitting completely flat against the body, allowing air to circulate more freely.
Although crisp in appearance, the cotton becomes softer and increasingly comfortable with washing and wear while retaining its characteristic woven texture.
IDEAL USES
• Summer shirts and relaxed button-downs
• Blouses and lightweight tops
• Breezy dresses
• Gathered skirts
• Tunics and kurtas
• Kaftans and resortwear
• Pyjamas and lightweight loungewear
• Children’s summer clothing
• Scarves and stoles
• Sheer overlays and layering pieces
• Warm-weather garment linings
• Table runners and napkins
• Light curtains
• Soft decorative home accents
Because the fabric is semi-opaque, lighter colours may require lining depending on the garment and desired coverage.
This is a stable woven fabric without mechanical stretch and is not suitable for patterns that depend on elasticity.
SEWING RECOMMENDATIONS
• Pre-wash the fabric before cutting
• Test the intended washing method on a measured swatch
• Allow the fabric to relax flat before laying out pattern pieces
• Avoid stretching or flattening the puckered texture during cutting
• Cut in a single layer when precise pattern placement is required
• Use a new, fine universal or Microtex needle
• Test a needle size of approximately 60/8 or 70/10
• Use fine, high-quality thread
• Select a short-to-medium stitch length after testing
• Stay-stitch curved and bias-cut edges
• Use French seams, enclosed seams, or a fine overlocked finish
• Use lightweight interfacing only where necessary
• Choose a narrow turned or rolled hem
• Press gently from the reverse side
• Avoid applying heavy pressure that may flatten the texture
For garments where complete coverage is required, a lightweight cotton lining may be added without compromising breathability.
WASH AND CARE
• Pre-washing is recommended
• Hand wash in cold water or machine wash on a cold, gentle cycle
• Wash separately for the first few washes
• Use a mild, pH-neutral detergent
• Do not bleach
• Avoid harsh fabric softeners
• Do not soak for prolonged periods
• Do not wring or twist
• Line dry in the shade
• Reshape gently while damp
• Avoid tumble drying
• Iron from the reverse side on a warm setting if required
• Use light pressure to preserve the puckered surface
• Steam gently rather than pressing heavily
The fabric will gradually soften with washing and use. This is a natural characteristic of minimally finished handwoven cotton.
PLEASE NOTE
• Subtle variations in yarn thickness, weave density, width, and texture are expected
• Minor differences in puckering may occur throughout the fabric
• These variations are characteristics of handloom production and are not considered defects
• The fabric is semi-opaque and may require lining
• It contains no elastane and has no mechanical stretch
• Mild relaxation or shrinkage may occur after washing
• Pre-washing and testing a measured swatch are strongly recommended
• Avoid heavy ironing, as this may temporarily flatten the textured surface
• Separate production batches may vary slightly in colour and texture
• Colour may appear different depending on lighting and screen settings
We recommend ordering a swatch before purchasing a larger quantity when exact colour, transparency, weight, texture, or drape is important for your project.
