    Description

    HANDWOVEN HEMP DRILL FABRIC

This beautifully structured handwoven hemp drill combines the strength and durability of a classic drill weave with the natural texture and breathable character of hemp.

At approximately 250 GSM, it is a substantial midweight fabric with enough body for trousers, jackets, workwear, overshirts, bags, and structured home textiles. The cloth feels firm and stable without the excessive stiffness of heavyweight canvas.

Woven by hand, the surface displays gentle variations in yarn thickness, twill definition, and texture. These subtle irregularities give the fabric a distinctly artisanal character that cannot be replicated by perfectly uniform industrial cloth.

Hemp may feel crisp or dry when new but gradually softens with washing and wear while retaining its inherent strength.

    HOW THE FABRIC IS MADE

This fabric is handwoven from hemp yarns in a drill-style twill construction.

The yarns interlace in an offset sequence to create the characteristic diagonal rib associated with drill fabrics. This construction gives the cloth strength, stability, and controlled drape.

The texture is created directly through the weave rather than by printing, embossing, or coating.

Because the fabric is made on a handloom, small changes in yarn thickness, weave density, and twill alignment may occur throughout the yardage. These variations are part of its authentic handmade character.

    SEWING RECOMMENDATIONS

    • Pre-wash the fabric before cutting

    • Test shrinkage using a measured swatch

    • Allow the cloth to rest flat before positioning pattern pieces

    • Keep the twill direction consistent across all pieces

    • Use sharp fabric scissors or a rotary cutter

    • Use a universal or denim needle

    • Test a size 90/14 or 100/16 needle

    • Use strong, high-quality thread

    • Select a medium-to-long stitch length after testing

    • Stay-stitch curved and bias-cut edges

    • Finish raw edges promptly, as hemp may fray

    • Use overlocking, binding, flat-felled seams, or enclosed seams

    • Reinforce pockets, handles, and stress points

    • Grade bulky seam allowances

    • Use a walking foot if several layers shift

    • Press from the reverse side with a pressing cloth

For jackets, trousers, and bags, a lining may be added for a cleaner interior and additional stability.

    WASH AND CARE

    • Pre-washing is strongly recommended

    • Hand wash or machine wash on a cold, gentle cycle

    • Wash separately for the first few washes

    • Use a mild, pH-neutral detergent

    • Do not bleach

    • Avoid harsh fabric softeners

    • Do not soak for prolonged periods

    • Avoid wringing or twisting

    • Line dry in the shade

    • Reshape while damp

    • Avoid tumble drying to minimise shrinkage

    • Iron while slightly damp on medium heat

    • Iron from the reverse side

    • Use a pressing cloth

The fabric will soften and relax naturally with washing and use while retaining its durability and distinctive handwoven texture.

    HANDLOOM CHARACTERISTICS

    This fabric may naturally display:

    • Hemp slubs

    • Variations in yarn thickness

    • Minor changes in twill alignment

    • Slight differences in weave density

    • Small knots or joined yarns

    • Subtle tonal movement

    • Gentle changes in width

    • Occasional handloom marks

These characteristics reflect the natural fibre and handweaving process. They are part of the fabric’s handmade identity and should not be considered defects.

    PLEASE NOTE

    • The fabric is approximately 48 inches wide

    • It is sold by the yard

    • Multiple yards will be supplied as one continuous piece whenever possible

    • The fabric has no mechanical stretch

    • Natural hemp may shrink or relax after washing

    • Pre-washing and testing a measured swatch are recommended

    • The surface will become softer with continued use
