    Description

    This quietly sophisticated handloom Kala Cotton fabric features an understated self-checkered grid created entirely through the weave—not through printing or surface embellishment. The subtle checks lend visual rhythm and depth while preserving the fabric’s clean, minimalist character.

    Woven using naturally pigmented brown Kala Cotton, the fabric carries the warm, earthy colour of the cotton fibre itself. The brown shade is naturally occurring rather than conventionally dyed, giving the cloth an organic appearance with gentle tonal variation.

    At 157 GSM, it falls within the light-to-midweight range. It is breathable and tactile, with enough body for softly tailored garments while remaining comfortable for relaxed clothing and refined home textiles. This slow-made fabric celebrates natural colour, handloom weaving, provenance, and honest craftsmanship.

    How It Is Made

    This fabric is handloom-woven from naturally brown Kala Cotton yarns. Its restrained, repeating check pattern is constructed through deliberate warp-and-weft placement, making the grid an integral part of the cloth rather than a design applied to its surface.

    The handloom process gives the fabric a distinctive tactile character. Minor variations in yarn thickness, check alignment, weave density, and tone may occur, reflecting the rhythm of hand weaving and the natural character of the cotton.

    The fabric receives a minimal finish to preserve its breathability, matte surface, and gently textured handfeel.

    About Kala Cotton

    Kala Cotton is an indigenous rain-fed cotton traditionally grown in the Kutch region of Gujarat, India. It is naturally resilient and well suited to the region’s dry climate.

    The fibre is valued for its breathability, durability, and distinctly earthy texture. Unlike highly processed cotton fabrics, handwoven Kala Cotton retains a more natural, tactile surface that softens gradually with washing and use.

    Ideal Uses

    This versatile Kala Cotton fabric is suitable for:

    * Shirts and blouses
    * Relaxed button-down shirts
    * Lightweight overshirts
    * Dresses and tunics
    * Skirts and pinafores
    * Loose trousers and shorts
    * Light jackets
    * Unstructured layering pieces
    * Children’s clothing
    * Bags and pouches
    * Lined textile accessories
    * Patchwork and quilting
    * Table runners
    * Napkins and placemats
    * Cushion covers
    * Refined home accents

    This is a stable woven fabric without stretch and is therefore not recommended for patterns that require significant elasticity or close-fitting stretch construction.

    Sewing Recommendations

    * Pre-wash before cutting to allow for natural relaxation
    * Test the chosen washing method on a small swatch
    * Use a universal needle suitable for light-to-midweight woven cotton
    * Finish raw edges with French seams, binding, or overlocking
    * Match the woven checks where required
    * Use interfacing sparingly to preserve the fabric’s natural hand
    * Stay-stitch curved and bias-cut edges to prevent distortion
    * Allow the fabric to rest flat before cutting

    For garments requiring additional opacity, structure, or a smoother interior, a lightweight cotton lining may be added.

    Wash and Care

    * Hand wash or machine wash on a cold, gentle cycle
    * Wash separately for the first few washes
    * Use a mild, pH-neutral detergent
    * Do not bleach
    * Avoid prolonged soaking
    * Do not wring or twist
    * Line dry in the shade
    * Avoid tumble drying
    * Reshape while damp
    * Iron while slightly damp for the best finish
    * Use a warm iron on the reverse side

    A mild relaxation or dimensional change may occur after the first wash. This is normal for minimally finished handloom cotton. Pre-washing the fabric before cutting is strongly recommended.

    Please Note

    As this fabric is handwoven from naturally pigmented cotton, subtle variations in colour, yarn thickness, check size, alignment, width, and weave density may occur. Small slubs and occasional irregularities are characteristic of the handmade process and should not be considered defects.

    The natural brown colour may vary slightly between production batches due to differences in the cotton harvest and yarn. We recommend purchasing sufficient fabric for your complete project in a single order, as an exact match between separate batches cannot be guaranteed.

    Colours may appear slightly different depending on lighting and screen settings. Please order a swatch first if exact colour, weight, texture, or drape is important for your project.
